Ritual Goodbyes

Wheel of the Year Tarot
It's strange, we started packing over a week ago, and we still have three days of moving ahead of us, yet this evening feels quite definitive: the power of ritual!

We went around the whole house, singing a goodbye song to every room.  My son sang his own verse in most rooms, and also told us to turn off the lights in each room as we left.  It wasn't a very planned ritual, but it worked for us all, I think :)

It was good to honour this house, where my son has lived for his entire six years.  It is also the place where my DH says he has been happiest.  I have happy memories of other homes: our first home, when my mum divorced my dad (before that we lived on boats, which I hate); our second home, with a cherry tree outside my bedroom window; my first independent flat in Paris at 18; a flat I lived in at the end of University; the flat I moved into in Madrid when I left my first long-term partner.

My time with my DH has also been wonderful, and most of that has been spent here.  When we moved in, we thought we'd be here for decades, and if it weren't for my son's disabilities we would have stayed.

Goodbye, home...

  1. What a wonderful way to express your gratitude to the walls that protected your family for so many years. :) Maybe you can do a welcoming/blessing ritual for your new home.

    1. Yes, we plan to do the same kind of thing, I think, singing hello to every room. I was also planning to go round with a smudge stick :)

  2. Most of the time impromptu rituals can work their magic even better than the elaborate scripted ones. This one has touched me and I think it is great you have done this together as a family.

    1. My DH suggested we should do something as a family, though most rituals in the past we haven't included my son. But it felt really nice, and I think he appreciated it, too :)

    1. Thanks, MM. You might not call it very nice if you heard the quality of my son's singing ;D Still, it did the trick! Hugs!!

    1. Thanks, Siddaleah! The first night wasn't great - our room was too hot, and the blackout curtains haven't arrived yet. Still, as you say, this is a move for years, so it'll take a while to iron out the bumps, and that's fine :)

    1. It was nice. As for the new place, we're planning to sing hello and smudge it on Saturday, when we all have a bit of free time. It's lovely already, but it will be good to "claim" it :)

  6. I have a nice ritual for a house blessing which includes smudging and asperging. I can post it on my blog. I think I got it from Grimoire of the Green Witch. You've left a beautiful house, but I bet your new one is equally as lovely! x

    1. I've never heard of asperging! We're settling in nicely, even though we haven't yet done our ritual. It feels odd to do it when there are still so many boxes about. Still, we finally got a TV up and running yesterday, so it's definitely starting to feel more homey ;) And there's a lot more light here, at least in the main family area, which is lovely!
